4/18/17 - Twitter
Tucker gave a presentation today on how to create or manage a successful Twitter account.

The Basics:
  • tweets are limited to 140 characters
  • users can post original content, re-tweet what they like, follow other users, "like" content, use hashtags and search for other users or hashtags
  • In creating a twitter profile, the first thing someone should do is add a profile picture, then create a bio, add a banner to their profile and add a link to another place in which the user is doing something interesting like YouTube channel or a blog.
  • It is recommended that a user follows less people than followers they have
  • adding images is very important, content is 40 times more likely to be shared if there is visual content
  • Posting original and creative content is a great way to achieve a successful twitter profile
  • Strategically using hashtags is a smart way to achieve more followers and attention on social media

2/24/17 - Avoiding Plagiarism

Neto's Video

Here are some vocab words that were noted down from the video that we have to know to write our upcoming research paper

  • Direct quotation: Integrating all or part of an original quotation from source to material into your writing with quotation marks and proper citation
  • Paraphrasing: Putting a quote from source material into your own words while still giving credit to original source. Paraphrases are usually shorter than the original passage, condensing it slightly
  • Summarizing: Putting the main ideas into your own words, while giving credit to the original source. These are significantly shorter than the original sources and is basically just a broad overview.
  • Plagiarism: Representing material from another source as your own without proper citation whether it be intentional or not.
Key Points from the video:
  • Direct quotations should be done sparingly with a good reason to use them when you do
  • Most of the time the research will be used for paraphrasing and summaries, especially in the background section of the research paper
  • Everything needs to be cited, when in doubt cite
Example from the video:

Neto gave us three versions of the original text, one is a summary, one is a paraphrasing and the other is plagiarized. The first one is a summary, you can tell because it is very concise and uses only the main points of the original passage and it has been cited at the end. The second one is unacceptably plagiarized, there is no citation. The third and final one is a paraphrase.

1/12/17 - Creating a Great Slide Deck
Presenting a slide deck can be a nerve wrecking experience but it can be a lot easier for the presenter if the audience can read the slide deck and understand the topic.

  • The text needs to be big enough, if the text is too small and the audience can't see it, there will be a lot of confusion and questions.
  • Add pictures, pictures help the audience with visualizing the idea and what the presentation is about.
  • Don't go crazy with the transitions and special effects. With all of the options available for the transitions the presentor can get carried away and the audience will get distracted.
  • Keep a consistent look, there should be a common theme with each slide like the same color background.
  • When it comes to text, less is always more. The presentor should always have the material well memorized and the text on the slide deck should only be for refrencing.
A nice slide deck is one of the most important things for a smooth presentation, it is critical that the presentor knows how to create a great slide deck.
